UE5: Double Your Environment Creation Speed with Group/Ungroup Technique

Category: UE5
January 11, 2024

Grouping objects together is a powerful technique that will make you create environments faster in UE5.

The way this works is you select a bunch of objects inside your level. Group them. Then next time you select any of the objects within a group, they all get selected.

You can now duplicate or reposition these objects with a single click, rather than having to select them all again.

Here is everything you need to know about Grouping/Ungrouping in UE5.

Video Tutorial

Grouping

Select a set of objects inside your level. These can anything you've already inserted into your map. It will usually be Static Meshes and lights.

  • Hold Ctrl = Add to or Remove from Selection

Right Click and choose Group:

  • Ctrl + G = Group

If you need to add something more to an already created group:

  • Select the Group
  • Add another object to the selection by Holding Ctrl
  • Right Click and Choose Groups > Add to Group

Ungrouping

If you need to Ungroup everything so it's all individual objects again. Select the group then Right Click and Choose Groups > Ungroup:

  • Shift + G = Ungroup

Unlock and Lock

Unlock/Lock allows you to modify (move, rotate, scale) objects that are within a group.

  • Select the Group
  • Right Click and choose Groups > Unlock
  • Move, rotate, scale any objects inside that group individually
  • Right Click and choose Groups > Lock to lock everything back into Group

Remove from Group

You can remove individual items from the group without having to Ungroup and Group again.

  • Right Click and choose Groups > Unlock to unlock the group
  • Select the object you want to remove
  • Right Click and choose Groups > Remove from Group
  • Select any object that is still part of the group
  • Right Click and choose Groups > Lock

Group Pivot Point

When objects are Grouped, the pivot point will be somewhere in the middle of that group.

You can temporarily modify this pivot point for easier positioning, rotation or scale.

  • Select the Group
  • Right Click and choose Pivot (and any of the options)

I usually choose Pivot > Set Pivot Offset Here (Snapped). You can do this in Perspective Viewport or any of theĀ  Orthographic Viewports.

This pivot point will not be saved and only works as long as you keep the Group's selection active.
